Is Hawaii Safe to Visit?

If you’re wondering “is Hawaii safe to visit” the answer is a resounding YES!

While Kilauea’s lava flow remains powerful after an initial eruption on May 3 and series of subsequent earthquakes, the island is not completely shut down – contrary to popular belief. Hawaii is still safe to visit, and for adventures, it may be the best time to do so!

It’s true that this is the most powerful volcanic activity Hawaii has seen in years. It’s also true that some residents in remote areas have been evacuated and families displaced (primarily in a small subdivision that’s over an hour and half from us here in Volcano Village). But, lava activity is – thus far – restricted to a small area at sea-level near the very southern tip of the island.

Unfortunately, as a precaution, Volcanos National Park has temporarily closed.

Lower East Rift Zone Eruption Update

According to USGS, as of early Tuesday morning, eruptions of ash from the Overlook vent in Halemaumau crater increased in intensity. Ash continues to rise from the vent and drift downwind to the southwest. NWS radar and pilot reports indicate the top of the ash cloud is as high as 10,000 to 12,000 feet above sea level. However, Ash emission from the summit will likely vary with periods of increased and decreased intensity as changes within the vent occur.

Conclusion

Is Hawaii safe to visit? Absolutely. Last week George D. Szigeti, president and CEO of the Hawaii Tourism Authority, said that the safety of residents and visitors is always the tourism industry’s top priority. He added that travelers with a trip already booked to the Hawaiian Islands or in the planning stages can be put at ease knowing their vacation experience will be unaffected.

“No flights into airports anywhere in Hawaii are being impacted by Kilauea Volcano and the area where the lava is coming to the surface is very far from resort areas throughout the Hawaiian Islands where visitor accommodations are located.

“Travelers can enjoy their vacation experience in the Hawaiian Islands to the fullest, with the only word of caution being that they stay out of areas closed to the public for their own safety.”
