Plan the perfect family vacation in Hawaii!
With its lush forests and breathtaking shorelines, Hawaii is a go-to destination for anyone looking to visit a tropical paradise – honeymooners, adventurers, sun-worshippers, and – of course – family vacationers! In fact, Hawaii is the perfect spot for cultural, educational, and fun experiences that both parents and children will love. Plus, you don’t need a passport to get here, the Zika virus isn’t a threat, and the weather is beautiful year-round. Here’s your guide to visiting Hawaii with kids, including our family-friendly hotel recommendation.
Pick Your Island
Located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, Hawaii Island, AKA the Big Island, has everything from snow-covered volcanoes to rainforests to white-sand beaches. Although it’s the largest of the Hawaiian islands, it has a smallish population of around 200,000 people.
Choose Your Activities
No matter your family’s travel style, the Big Island has activities for everyone. Here are the island’s best cultural, historic, thrill-seeking, relaxing, and nature-centered things to do.
Cultural: To fully experience Hawaiian and Polynesian cultures, take your children to a traditional Luau. These feasts are fairly common on the island. You can also look for classes in ukulele, hula, and lei making. Volcano Arts Center is an organization in Volcano Village that offers several family-friendly programs.
Historic: Why not take your family to the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor where they’ll learn about World War II? It’s the perfect stop for history buffs. They might also enjoy the Pacific Tsunami Museum that houses artifacts from the 1946 Tsunami that devastated the island, or the Imiloa Astronomy Center.
Thrill-Seeking: Some say the best way to see the islands is via helicopter tour, there are a few tour outfits to choose from. If flying isn’t your thing, you can try zip-lining, snorkeling, paddle boarding, or surfing. Check out more options on our Activities page.
Relaxing: It’s no secret that Hawaii has plenty of gorgeous beaches. You’ll find white, black, red, and green sand on the shores! Relax on the beach while your kids ride the waves and build sandcastles. If you’re lucky, you’ll see sea turtles, whales (from October-April), and other ocean wildlife!
Nature-Centered: The island of Hawaii is home to Volcanoes National Park, which offers countless beautiful hiking paths, ranging from beginner level to advanced. The effort is worth the reward on these adventurous treks since you’ll see volcanoes, mountains, beaches, canyons, waterfalls, and plenty of greenery. Kilauea Hospitality Group is situated just a few miles from the entrance of the park.
