Planning a trip to Volcano, Hawaii, and wondering what to pack? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Here’s an all-inclusive packing list for your Big Island vacation.
A Good Day Pack
It’s likely that while in Volcano you’ll enjoy some short day trips or light hikes. That’s why a good day pack is so important. Try one that holds 11–20 liters for short, simple, hikes or something bigger for treks where more food, water, clothing, and gear is required. Look for a pack that is water-resistant, lightweight, and comfortable to wear.
Conditions Appropriate Clothing and Footwear
Check the forecast and bring weather-appropriate items. It’s also a good idea to be prepared for changing weather. Bring items that offer plenty of protection from both the sun and rain. For footwear, decide what to bring based on planned activities.
- Shorts
- T-shirts/tanks
- Sundresses
- Polo shirts
- Sarong
- Bathing suits (2)
- Athletic shorts
- Athletic tops
- Flip-flops
- Sneakers
- Hiking boots
- Socks
- Sun hat

Toiletries and Personal Care Items
Bring any personal items you use on a daily basis as they may be more expensive on the island.
- Shampoo/conditioner/body lotion in reusable travel bottles
- Toothpaste/toothbrush
- Comb/Hairbrush
Reef Safe Sunscreen (even if you won’t be swimming)
We all know sunscreen is important, especially in the hot sun of Hawaii. So, make sure to pack plenty of reef-safe sunscreen ONLY. Reef safe sunscreen is certified safe for reefs and turtles too. Hawaii has a very delicate ecosystem and researchers have found that chemicals in traditional sunscreens destroy the coral reef! In fact, there are even plans to ban oxybenzone-based sunscreen from Hawaii altogether.
Mosquito Repellant (wristbands and spray)
There are mosquitos in Hawaii. Therefore, you’ll want to protect yourself against itchy bug bites. Natural insect-repelling wristbands last up to 300 hours, but we also recommend using a natural insect repellent spray or oil to maximize your protection.
Food and Water
It’s not hard to find delicious food in Volcano, but it’s never a bad idea to keep some protein-packed snacks like energy bars or nuts on hand. Also, make sure to drink plenty of water. It’s hot and humid on the Big Island, so staying hydrated is very important – especially if you want to keep your energy up to explore.
Information About Hawaii
There are many great travel books and guide you may consider purchasing and bringing with you. In them, you’ll find plenty of information about the islands, their history, and fragile ecosystems.

You may or may not find these items necessary, but in Volcano, you’re sure to see some amazing sights. Binoculars and a camera could definitely come in handy.
