Hawai’i Kuauli Pacific & Asia Cultural Festival | May 17 – 19 | Kona
This 3-day event is a celebration of Hawai’i Island as a cultural melting pot. It’s packed with food, fashion, cultural expressions, a keiki hula competition, special culinary experiences and cultural workshops. Hosted by the Courtyard by Marriott King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel in Kailua-Kona, this huge festival truly does have something for everyone.
Hawaiian Sunset Saturdays | Saturdays | Kona
Take in Kona’s spectacular sunsets with live Hawaiian music and unforgettable hula performed by the dancers of Halau Ka’eaikahelelani, directed by kumu hula Yuki Ka’ea Lyons and Lily Kahelelani Lyons Dudoit.
Bring lawn chairs or beach mats for an evening of great music and dancing as the sun begins to set over the horizon. As Hawaiian Sunset Saturday comes to a close, visitors are invited to extend their evenings at one of many nearby restaurants.
Niaulani Nature Walk | Mondays | Volcano
Experience the Hawaiian rainforest with the help of professional guides at Niaulani. These free walks are offered every Monday at 9:30 am and explore the most diverse, intact, and accessible, old-growth koa/’ohi’a rain forest left in the US. No reservations are required for groups of five or fewer. While this event is always free, donations are greatly appreciated. Hula Performances at Kilauea | May 18 | Volcanos National Park
Come see authentic Hawaiian hula! Held on the 3rd Saturday of each month, hula halau from across Hawaiʻi perform in an outdoor setting unlike any other in the world. The kahua hula in Hawai’i Volcanoes National park was the idea of the late hula mater Edith Kanaka’ ole, kumu hula of Halau o Kekuhi. The kahua hula is located just a short distance from the Volcano Art Center Gallery in an area known called Ka‘auea. This sacred spot offers the kumu (master) and haumana (student) a pristine view into Halemaumau, the home of volcanic deity Pelehonuamea.
